Staying Active and Healthy During the Winter

If you like spending time outdoors, leading a healthy and active lifestyle is easy most of the year. Hiking, biking, gardening, and other outdoor activities are all great ways to keep your body moving. But then comes winter, when the temperature drops and your desire to go outside drops with it.

While there’s nothing wrong with staying cozy and warm during those long winter months, fully giving in to the desire to hibernate isn’t going to lead to desirable outcomes for your health. Weight gain, loss of muscle mass, and other effects of a sedentary lifestyle can wreak havoc on your joints and set the stage for injury.

So how can you stay active and healthy during the winter? Read on.

Build an At-Home Fitness Routine

There are plenty of stretches, exercises, and activities you can take on from the comfort of your own home. While stationary bikes and other home gym equipment are great, you also don’t need a fancy setup or lots of gear to get an effective workout. If you’re looking for a way to stay active this winter without braving the weather, try taking up a calisthenics routine or following some at-home yoga tutorials online. Even just developing a habit of daily stretching will help keep your joints happy all winter long.

Layer Up and Head Out

As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. The key to staying comfy even in the coldest weather is layering up. This is especially true if you’re exercising in the cold, as you’ll be able to add or remove layers as needed. Materials make a big difference as well. For workout gear, choose wool or high-tech fibers that won’t lose their insulating properties when they get damp from sweat. And don’t forget a hat or headband to keep your ears warm!

Try a New Class

Winter is a perfect time to try out that new fitness studio in the neighborhood or to dip your toes (literally) into an indoor pool. Joining a class with a regular schedule is a great way to stay motivated. Try something new and see how it fits your lifestyle—you never know, maybe you’ll stick with it even once the weather warms up again!

Treat Yourself

Massages, steam rooms, and saunas are all great for loosening up muscles, and they can be especially beneficial during winter. Making a habit out of these self-care routines can be a great way to stay loose, lower stress levels, and have something to look forward to even on the coldest winter days.

Dealing With Injuries from Inactivity

On the other hand, if you’ve let the winter doldrums get the better of you, you might find yourself pulling a muscle or tweaking a joint when you do get back to being active. In that case, it could be time to pay a visit to a qualified orthopedic specialist like those at Abilene Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. Scheduling an appointment is easy, and we’re ready to help you get back to the active lifestyle you love!
